The Scholars Tower: Four years have passed since the troubles that befell our village, and still men speak of them in hushed voices by winter fires. The Black Death has come and gone, claiming more souls than Brother Edmund's failed working ever did, yet it is his story they remember with particular dread. Perhaps because plague, for all its horror, follows patterns men can understand—it spreads from person to person, city to city, along roads and rivers that honest folk can see. But what Edmund wrought seemed to spring from the very air itself, born of knowledge that no Christian man should possess.
